Health Matters HIV program
2 December 2016
This week is Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander HIV Awareness Week, which is held annually to coincide with World AIDS Day.
The theme for 2016 is ‘You and me can stop HIV’ and aims to raise community awareness of HIV and ultimately reduced HIV rates in the Aboriginal community.
Health Matters, a fortnightly program on Noongar Radio raised awareness of this campaign through Lisa Bastian, Manager, Sexual Health and Blood borne Virus Program, Department of Health; Shahmir Rind, Health Promotion Officer-Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Programs, WA AIDS Council; and special guest, Hartley Williams, a young man living with HIV.
HIV was discussed sincerely, from what it is, how you get it, symptoms and treatment.
Hartley’s personal experience was able to dispel any fears and misconceptions people may have about the disease. Through medical management, Hartley has maintained his career as a professional dancer while staying healthy, positive and active.
The program finished with an honest discussion busting common myths about HIV.
