School leavers: Talk. Test. Protect.
School leavers: Talk. Test. Protect.
15 November 2024
Leavers’ events are an opportunity to for the class of 2024 to celebrate the end of school with friends and blow off steam from the stresses of Year 12.
Parents are encouraged to talk to their teenagers about informed decision making and how this might be impacted when celebrating, especially when alcohol and other drugs may be involved.
Talking about respect, consent, contraception, sexually transmissible infections (STIs), condoms and where to go if they need help is a really important step empowering young people to make good decisions.
Follow the simple steps of:
- Talk – Get consent for any sexual activity. Talk openly with your partner/s about consent, pleasure and safer sex. Remember these are ongoing conversations.
- Test – Get tested for STIs before and after Leavers.
- Protect – Always use condoms and/or dams when having vaginal, anal and oral sex.
Before the celebrations begin, leavers are urged to plan ahead and be prepared and pack condoms.
The Department of Health is working with other government agencies and organisations to provide on-the-ground support and health care for those attending this year’s Leavers’ event.
