10,000 babies protected from RSV

27 May 2024

10,000 babies in WA have now received the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) immunisation.

This will potentially prevent 400 infants from being hospitalised this winter.

However, we still need as many babies as possible to get immunised to protect them from getting sick from this highly infectious illness, which infects up to two-thirds of babies in their first year of life.

With winter just around the corner, WA Health is urging parents to book an appointment to get their babies immunised against RSV as soon as possible at GP practices, Community Health Clinics and Aboriginal Medical Services that provide childhood immunisations.

The RSV immunisation is also now available to newborns before they leave hospital, until the end of September.
