Breastfeeding Centre of WA

The Breastfeeding Centre of WA provides breastfeeding information and support for families in Western Australia.

Telephone counselling

The centre offers a statewide telephone counselling service for health professionals and women experiencing breastfeeding problems. It may be necessary to leave your name and number on an answering machine and a lactation consultant will return your call.

Phone 6458 1844 between 8.00am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday.

Centre consultations

Breastfeeding Centre of WA appointments are also available for mothers and babies who attended King Edward Memorial Hospital for their pregnancy and birth.

Coming to the centre enables a mother and her baby (babies) to have a one on one appointment with a lactation consultant. The appointment is for an hour and a half, and your support person/partner is welcome. During the appointment, the lactation consultant will take a medical history, review your baby’s progress and assess a breastfeed. The lactation consultant will then work with you to develop a plan to assist with your breastfeeding challenge. If necessary, a follow up appointment will be made. 

Appointments are essential. If you have twins or more, please advise at the time you have make your appointment, as we will allocate a longer appointment.

Referrals

Mothers are encouraged to self-refer. Other referral sources include:

  • midwife
  • visiting Midwifery Service
  • community nurse or midwife
  • obstetrician
  • GP.

What to bring to an appointment

Please bring:

  • you baby’s health record book
  • any expressing equipment you may be using
  • nappies and change of clothes for your baby
  • pram (for your baby to sleep in)
  • plastic bag for soiled nappies
  • your lunch (drinks provided)
  • comfortable clothes easy for breastfeeding.
