Australia has one of the lowest rates of cervical cancer in the world, largely due to the success of the National Cervical Screening Program (NCSP) (external site) that was introduced in 1991 as a joint Australian, State and Territory Government initiative.
The Western Australian Cervical Cancer Prevention Program (WACCPP) supports the delivery of the NCSP in WA, which includes implementation of a range of health promotion strategies and management of the Cervical screening data and statistics. These core activities aim to drive Program participation, particularly among never-screened and under-screened women, and maximise equitable access to cervical screening.
The NCSP recommends that all women aged 25 to 74 years who have ever been sexually active have a Cervical Screening Test every five years. Self-collection of a vaginal sample for human papillomavirus (HPV) testing is also available for eligible women.
