Information for GPs – Southern Inland Health Initiative

Over half a billion dollars is being invested to improve health care in the southern inland area of Western Australia. 

This is the most significant investment into regional health in Western Australia’s history and is leading health reform for rural and remote Western Australian communities.

Developing safe and sustainable Emergency Department networks and ensuring the integration of General Practice with Primary Health Care are 2 key drivers of the Southern Inland Health Initiative.

Doctors will have a unique opportunity to work in private general practice while participating in 24/7 emergency department network rosters – either on the floor or close on-call.

A generous incentive package is on offer to encourage private GPs back into country towns to support hospitals along with:

  • visiting specialists and other health professionals
  • the use of innovative telehealth technology to support staff and hospitals.

Do you fit the bill?

We are looking for qualified doctors to participate in:

  • emergency rosters
  • multidisciplinary team healthcare
  • the provision of sound clinical governance
  • primary health care service delivery to network towns and their surrounding communities.

We are looking for general practitioners with skills and experience in:

  • emergency medicine
  • obstetrics
  • anaesthetics
  • general surgery
  • Aboriginal health.

GPs will participate in a networked model of care, with a focus on primary health and emergency care services delivery.

Which are the network towns?

The Southern Inland Health Initiative will build the capacity of an integrated network of towns to provide long term, appropriate health care to residents and those in surrounding, smaller towns.

The network towns include:

  • Meekatharra
  • Merredin
  • Northam
  • Narrogin
  • Katanning
  • Bridgetown/Manjimup
  • Collie
  • Moora
  • Morawa
  • Dongara
  • Kalbarri
  • Esperance

Of these towns, 6 hospitals will receive significant upgrades including:

  • Northam
  • Narrogin
  • Merredin
  • Katanning
  • Manjimup/Bridgetown
  • Collie.

Esperance and Meekatharra will also join these towns in providing 24/7 emergency coverage.

Primary care services will be strengthened in:

  • Katanning
  • Merredin
  • Narrogin
  • Northam.
