The GSWA facilitates outreach clinics in the following areas:
- Albany – general, paediatric, and adult genetics and familial cancer (held quarterly)
- Bunbury – general, paediatric, and adult genetics and familial cancer (held quarterly)
- Geraldton – general, paediatric, and adult genetics and familial cancer (held quarterly)
- Joondalup – general genetics (monthly)
- Kalgoorlie – general, paediatric, and adult genetics and familial cancer (held quarterly)
- Port Hedland – general, paediatric, and adult genetics and familial cancer (held quarterly)
- Rockingham – general genetics and familial cancer (monthly).
GSWA screening and diagnostic services
The laboratories provide a wide range of screening and diagnostic tests on specimens from any tissue, including fetal cells from antenatal procedures.
The disorders for which testing is offered is dynamic and can be modified according to local needs and demands.
Molecular DNA, cytogenetic and biochemical testing will be ordered as appropriate to meet the individual needs of the patient.
Testing may be offered for antenatal or postnatal diagnostic purposes, to assess carrier status, or for predictive purposes for adult onset conditions.
Familial Cancer Program provides testing for inherited cancer predisposition conditions such as:
- Breast and ovarian cancer (BRCA1 & 2)
- Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP)
- Hereditary non-polypotic colonic cancer (HNPCC, Lynch syndrome).
Obstetrics and General Genetic Services provides testing for a range of conditions. Testing may be covered by Medicare or in rare cases may involve a cost to the patient.
Genetic testing carries implications for life insurance, other family members and in some cases for future employment opportunities, therefore it is vital the patient undergoes genetic counselling prior to having a genetic test carried out. GSWA provides this.
Cytogenetics and molecular cytogenetics
- Routine karyotype on blood, skin, fetal tissue including amniocentesis, CVS or cordocentesis.
