Nurses and midwives registered with the WA Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia for 50 years were honoured with certificates and commemorative badges in recognition of their years of service recently.

Out of the 25 nurses and midwives who achieved the honour this year, 11 attended an intimate high tea ceremony with family and colleagues at Fraser’s in Kings Park, organised by the Department of Health’s Nursing and Midwifery Office.
One of the recipients, Mieke Slee said she was ‘chuffed’ to receive the letter inviting her to be part of this occasion.
“For me, there are no regrets, just joy at having chosen wisely 55 years ago, and having met so many wonderful people who have enriched my life’s experiences, and some who became friends for life,” she said.
Mieke began her career at St John of God Ballarat Hospital, Victoria and after a long journey in between continues to work at St John of God Midland Public Hospital four days a fortnight.
Susanne Alexander was also honoured for her long service and dedication.
“I have worked 50 years as a nurse, even with two pregnancies – one with twins. I probably wouldn’t have worked the year I had the twins, but we moved to Fitzroy Crossing and they were in desperate need of a nurse,” she said.
Susanne continues to work five days a fortnight training young nurses.
The honours were presented by Marie Louise MacDonald, Chair of the WA Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, Maha Rajagopal, Executive Director of Nursing and Midwifery East Metropolitan Health Service and Marie Slater, Executive Director of Nursing Services North Metropolitan Health Service.
