HIV prevention drug trial

22 November 2017

Western Australians at risk of HIV can access a free, preventative drug as part of a two-year trial launched this week.

HIV aids

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) has proven to be a safe and effective way to reduce the risk of HIV infection by 96 per cent.

The pre-exposure prophylaxis implementation trial for WA, (PrEPIT WA) will focus on linking people at risk of contracting HIV to a service which can help them decide whether PrEP is right for them.

The trial will be available for up to 2,000 people and will run out of four WA clinics:

  • The M Clinic (part of WA Aids)
  • GP on Beaufort
  • Royal Perth Hospital Sexual Health Clinic
  • Fremantle Hospital's South Terrace Clinic.

It will also be available for rural Western Australians through Telehealth at Royal Perth Hospital Sexual Health Clinic.

Visit the PrEP-IT website (external site) to find out more or to register your interest in participating in the trial.
